David Turnbull says Celtic should aim to WIN Europa Conference League

DAVID TURNBULL says Celtic should aim to WIN the Europa Conference League.

Ange Postecoglou’s side face a play-off in February for a place in the round of 16 of the new UEFA Third Division tournament.

Turnbull’s penalty won the game against Real Betis

Turnbull scored as Celtic beat Real Betis 3-2 midweek and has no fear heading into Monday’s draw.

When asked if the Hoops could win the tournament, the midfielder replied, “Why not? Every game we treat the same. Once we get the toss and find out who we’re getting, it’s going to be about beating them first.

“We’re going to try to get started and I’m sure we’ll all be focused on that. We will try to do our best and go as far as possible.

“I can not wait to be there. We cannot focus on winning trophies in competitions that have not yet started.

“It’s still in the knockout stage so we’ll be focusing on one game at a time.”

Celtic will face Bodo / Glimt, Maccabi Tel Aviv, PAOK, Partizan Belgrade, Qarabag, Slavia Prague, Randers, Vitesse or Spurs in the draw.

Turnbull said: “It’s a new tournament that has just started this season.

“The big teams that don’t do their best or don’t qualify for the final stages of the Europa League are participating, so each team will be of high quality.

“You never get an easy game in Europe so I’m sure it will be a good experience.”

Celtic face Motherwell on Sunday as they seek to maintain their title bid, despite numerous injuries. Kyogo Furuhashi and Albian Ajeti joined Jota and Giorgos Giakoumakis on the treatment table midweek.

Turnbull said, “Having so many games takes its toll on your body.

“Obviously we don’t want injuries, but we talked about that on Thursday night. These are boys who occupy these positions.

“They can do as well and work hard for the team. I don’t think we have to worry.

“We had a batch of boys come in and they all played brilliantly. They showed everyone what they could do.

“Everyone knows our schedule is quite busy as we enter Christmas time.

“I’m sure we will need everyone, when it is, if someone gets injured or is late in games and we need to change something.

“I’m sure all the boys will be ready.”

Turnbull is on nine goals for the season and is desperate to add more in a crucial run.

He said: “I want to try to score as many goals as possible from the midfield.

“That’s what I did and I love to score them, so I hope there will be a lot more to come.”
