On May 5, the River Center Boardroom in Peterborough was designated as the Bonnie Harris Parent Room to recognize the service and contributions of Bonnie Harris to River Center programming and parent education in the area of Monadnock and beyond. Staff and board members were on hand to celebrate her and her accomplishments.
Harris was the founder of the former Parent Guidance Center before it became The Family Center in 2002 and then The River Center in 2010. She developed her own parenting program, the Effective Parenting Workshop, and is the author of “When Your Kids Push Your Buttons” and “Confident Parents, Remarkable Kids”. She has received national and international exposure for her approach to parenting and was recognized in 2016 with the Family Support New Hampshire Kay Sidway Award for her family support work.
“Her impact has been wide and the people who have taken her classes, read her books, listened to her podcast, I can’t imagine the thousands of families she has touched. It is so remarkable. Her impact on the community has been profound,” said Susan Knight, former executive director of the Family Center.
Harris recently decided to step back from offering regular programs at the River Center in order to spend more time with her family, but she continues her private practice work in parent counseling and coaching as well as her weekly podcast, ” Tell Me About Your Kids.” She also continues to write a monthly column on parenting-related topics in the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript and a blog at bonnieharris.com.
“I hope The River Center will always continue to offer parenting education, support and advice to expectant mothers and to reach out to parents of teens,” she said. “I hope that my principles will continue and that it will remain and continue to grow as a truly viable and well-known center, not only in the community, but in the surrounding area.”
A plaque with Harris’s name will oversee the center’s meeting area for career development and parenting programs.
