Rennes suffer injury setback ahead of Europa Conference League draw with Leicester City

Rennes suffered a major injury setback ahead of their clash with Leicester City in the Europa Conference League.

The Foxes retain the lead ahead of Thursday’s European clash after beating their French opponents 2-0 at the King Power Stadium last week. But the second leg hosts have been dealt a blow ahead of the Foxes’ visit with the news that number one goalkeeper Alfred Gomis will be out injured until May with a finger problem.

Gomis took a knock to one of his fingers in the 4-2 league win over Lyon at the weekend which meant he spent around 4-6 weeks in the treatment room. The Senegalese keeper has made four Conference League appearances so far but has been a mainstay under Bruno Génésio in Ligue 1 with his 22 outings.

In his absence, Génésio is expected to bring in 19-year-old marksman Dogan Alemda to fill the gap between the posts. The Turkey U21 international goalkeeper has made seven appearances in all competitions this season, including five in Ligue 1 when he covered for Gomis as they won the Africa Cup of Nations.

During his time as interim number one, Rennes beat Bordeaux and Stade Brestois but were beaten by Lens, Clermont Foot and Paris Saint Germain.

Speaking ahead of Thursday’s meeting in France, Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers said he was “fully aware” of the threats posed by Rennes. He said: “They started the game well at home against ourselves and we expected that away.
