Luke Thomas insists the Europa Conference League can help Leicester City reach their target for the season

Leicester City defender Luke Thomas has said playing Europa League football again next season is the main focus of the current campaign.

City have entered the competition for the past two seasons after consecutive fifth-place finishes in the Premier League.

Last season they fell in the Round of 16 against Slavia Prague, with this campaign seeing them fall into the new UEFA Europa Conference League.

After defeating Danish Cup winners Randers in the qualifiers, City were instilled as one of the favorites to go all the way and win the competition.

They were drawn against French side Rennes, a tie that Thomas knows presents a major test for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

“We felt like this round was one of the toughest draws we could get and we know how well they are doing in the league by the minute,” he said during the conference. pre-match press.

“They’re fourth in the league, which just goes to show how well they’ve been doing so far.”

The incentive for winners to play the Europa League again next season is something that Thomas says puts more emphasis on getting as far as possible.

“With the way the season has gone so far it probably makes it even more of a great competition for us at this stage. We know that puts us in the Europa League next season and that’s one of our main goals for the rest of the season,” he said.

“Being in Europe is one of the best feelings, it’s great to have games on Tuesday nights and Thursday nights, so hopefully we can be there again next year and show what we have. in the rest of the competition and carry on, so hopefully we will move on to the next round and hope to see you in the finals in May.

If they progress to the last eight of the tournament, City will look to take the lead in the home game ahead of next week’s trip to France.

“It’s always difficult to go to Europe as we have achieved so far this season, we haven’t had the best away results in the Europa League,” Thomas said.

“So hopefully we can show our qualities tomorrow and get the result at home which we can bring back to their place, show what we have there and go through to the next round.”
