National Conference League, Leigh East 24 Shaw Cross Sharks 22

0

LEIGH East made a winning start to their National Conference League campaign after battling back 6-16 to claim victory.

So often in recent years, close games have taken precedence over the opposition. This time it was Leigh East day.

The Shaw Cross Sharks came out to play and, buoyed by the performance of first rowers Zach Parkinson and Matthew West, got to work. Callum Barker cleared a gap for the visitors and Brad Baines converted.

East fired back quickly when they went left and Ben Mercer held the ball long enough for the defense to bite and Joe Digby fired for the try. Ben Woods added the first of four goals.

Shaw Cross responded with two tries. Leading second row Ryan Chalkley dived from the dummy half and then Tom Ashen found himself outside Ben Wharton from a scrum to score. Baines’ second goal opened the 6-16 lead.

Cameron Clark ensured the hosts were within touching distance at half-time with an improved score from Woods to make it 12-16.

Clark had a great game and continued his form in the second half when he backed Cobyn Fletcher to crash for his second after Kieron Prescott chased Woods’ kick from a scrum.

The decisive try went East when the excellent Prescott crossed the middle of Mercer’s pass and Woods’ fourth goal made it 24-16.

A self-converted try from Dec Tomlinson with eight minutes left ensured a nervy ending, but Leigh East held on.

Celtic Have Rejected The Chance To Sign The Europa Conference League Star Who Could Soon Leave For Free

Celtic have rejected the chance to sign the Europa Conference League star who could soon leave for free

Celtic were offered the chance to sign Bodo/Glimt striker Ola Solbakken last summer but the Bhoys apparently had other ideas.

This is according to the Scottish Daily Expresswho claim Solbakken was touted as a transfer option to Celtic last summer.

It should be noted that We Are Celts actually got this story first and The Express apparently support this.

Ange Postecoglou was looking to rebuild the Celtic squad at the time, but Solbakken’s agent refused to be carried away by the rumors during an interview with The Express.

Solbakken, 23, plays mostly as a right winger and cuts the inside of his left foot to wreak havoc.

The Norwegian star scored against Celtic on Thursday night, helping Bodo/Glimt knock Bhoys out of the Europa Conference League.

Solbakken was a constant threat, taking his Conference League tally to five goals and two assists in just eight appearances.

Celtic apparently felt Solbakken wasn’t a good fit for them last summer but could they try again later?

Solbakken is out of contract at the end of 2022, meaning he can actually sign a pre-contract deal this summer.

Celtic have a few right-sided wingers in Liel Abada and James Forrest, but Solbakken could be a bargain just too good to pass up

Bodo/Glimt have been a real success story under Kjetil Knutsen and Solbakken could be the last star to leave as a result.

Jens Petter Hauge has joined AC Milan, Philip Zinckernagel at Watford, Kasper Junker at Urawa Red Diamonds and, most recently, Fredrik Andre Bjorkan at Hertha Berlin and Patrick Berg at Lens.

Solbakken could soon be Bodo/Glimt’s next big export, with Celtic surely thinking of him; maybe hoping their luck hasn’t completely gone away.

Europa Conference League Stats Dive Alternate Stars Of Knockout Play Off Second Legs Uefa Europa Conference League

Europa Conference League stats dive: alternate stars of knockout play-off second legs | UEFA Europa Conference League

0

UEFA.com has a treasure trove of statistics covering many aspects of the game to improve the UEFA Europa Conference League, Europe’s newest club competition.

In this article, brought to you by Swissquote, we review the data to see who got the best billing on a number of match-defining metrics.

Check out Conference League stats

Most passes completed

Highlights: Bodø/Glimt 2-0 Celtic

97: Carl Starfelt (Celtic)
83: Stephen Welsh (Celtic)
73: Kevin Medina (Qarabag)
69: Filip Panak (Sparta Prague)

Despite finding themselves on the losing side against Bodø/Glimt, Celtic centre-backs Starfelt and Welsh have both racked up impressive numbers for their distribution, with Starfelt also having been one of the top contenders for the transition to the first leg. Likewise, centre-halves Medina and Panák also performed well, although their teams also withdrew from the Europa Conference League.

Finished crosses

Highlights: Slavia Prague 3-2 Fenerbahce

Highlights: Slavia Prague 3-2 Fenerbahce

5: Srdjan Plavsic (Slavia Prague)
3: Abdellah Zoubir (Qarabag)

Floating away from a No.10 position, Slavia’s pint-sized Plavšić initiated the Czech side’s first of three goals against Fenerbahçe with a deep strike. Scoring the second-best number of crosses, Zoubir proved a nuisance down Qarabağ’s left, despite a fairly straightforward Marseille victory in Baku.

Recovered balls

Highlights: Vitesse 2-0 Rapid Vienna

Highlights: Vitesse 2-0 Rapid Vienna

13: Kevin Wimmer (Rapid Vienna)
12: Danilho Doekhi (Speed)
12: Alois Oroz (Speed)
11: Ibrahim Sangare (PSV)

Responsible for part of the total of 44 balls recovered by Rapid Wien, Wimmer is at the top of the table. However, right behind him, Vitesse’s main fighters Doekhi and Oroz picked up 12 each as they helped the Dutch side close their first leg deficit to knock out Wimmer and Co.

Clearances

Highlights: Partizan 2-1 Sparta Prague

Highlights: Partizan 2-1 Sparta Prague

15: Igor Vujacic (Partizan)
7: Mads Thychosen (Midtjylland)
7: Boubacar Kamara (Marseille)
7: David Hancko (Sparta Prague)
6: Marcel Tisserand (Fenerbahce)

Sparta Praha eventually penetrated Partizan’s defensive blockade, but for 85 minutes Vujačic and his back line proved impassable. Warding off the visitors’ advances, the centre-half set up to help the Serbian side reach the last 16, racking up a massive 15 clearances in the process – the most on a single matchday this season.

Most backups

Highlights: Randers 1-3 Leicester

Highlights: Randers 1-3 Leicester

5: Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester)
5: Joel Drommel (PSV)
5: Elias Rafn Olafsson (Midtjylland)
5: Altay Bayındır (Fenerbahce)
4: Joe Hart (Celtic)

As their 23 attempts on goal indicate, Leicester’s opponents Randers needed something special to recover from their 4-1 first leg defeat. With only a handful of them a real threat, Schmeichel looked set for a clean sheet to accompany his five saves – until a late lapse in concentration offered the Danish hosts some consolation. Elsewhere, had it not been for Drommel’s vital 87th-minute reaction stoppage against Maccabi Tel-Aviv, PSV’s Round of 16 fate might have been different as the match had begun to tilt in favor of the Israeli club.

Former European champions Marseille and PSV Eindhoven took a step closer to becoming the first UEFA Europa Conference League winners with solid wins on Thursday, but Celtic had no way back as the Glasgow giants were stuck in Bodø/Glimt.

Elsewhere, Partizan confirmed their place in Friday’s round of 16 tie on an upside-down night for Ricardo Gomes, while Slavia Praha moved on to the next stage after a second 3-2 victory against Fenerbahce.

Predictor: How did you do?

Randers 1-3 Leicester City (agg: 2-7)

Highlights: Randers 1-3 Leicester

A spectacular brace from James Maddison helped Leicester to an aggregate victory in Denmark. Harvey Barnes put the Foxes ahead after just two minutes, before the hosts grew bigger and Kasper Schmeichel was forced to dismiss Stephen Odey in fine fashion.
