The group stage of the Europa Conference Conference begins in September as the third continental European football club competition behind the Champions League and the Europa League. UEFA has announced the upcoming launch of the new tournament in 2018, with the 2021/22 edition set to be the first.
The Champions League and the Europa League will continue to attract attention, but for most of the clubs involved the Conference League is a big deal. Some of them are taking part in European competitions for the first time or for a long time, and fans of these teams will be particularly delighted to see their clubs face off against foreign teams.
The qualifying rounds are now over and the group stage is scheduled to start on September 16, 2021. The final will take place in Tirana, the capital of Albania, on May 25, 2022.

Who will win the Europa Conference League 2021/22?
Tottenham Hotspur are clearly the favorites to win the Europa Conference League this season. Harry Kane, one of the best strikers in the world, will take part in UEFA’s third division competition after Spurs finished seventh in the Premier League last season. Tottenham haven’t won silverware since 2008 and will likely take this competition seriously, an attitude that will be encouraged by their manager Nuno Espirito Santo. It’s hard to look past a Tottenham triumph as it stands.
If Spurs don’t get their hands on the trophy, Roma could. Jose Mourinho, the manager who managed Tottenham for most of last season, could even make the Conference League his priority if success is in sight in the spring. Roma have a strong squad and there is an argument that Mourinho’s style of football is better suited for knockout tournaments than a round robin format.
Rennes and Feyenoord are third favorites according to bet365, with Union Berlin just behind. If you’re looking for an exterior choice, consider Slavia Prague on +3300. The Czech side reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League last season, impressively beating Rangers and Leicester City along the way.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How to qualify for the Europa Conference Conference?
There are several ways to qualify for the Europa Conference League. UEFA ranks the 55 European leagues according to their strength, and this ranking determines how teams from different countries enter the competition. A total of 72 clubs, all from European leagues ranked between 29th and 55th, enter the first qualifying round, either via a national cup victory, a second place in the national league or a third place in the league.
The second qualifying round is divided into two sections: champions and non-champions, which indicate whether or not a club won their domestic championship in the previous season. The Champions Road features 20 teams eliminated from the Champions League qualifiers. The non-champions course features the winners of the first qualifying round, plus 54 teams from the leagues ranked between seventh and 29th, and the team that finished fifth in the domestic league placed sixth (for 2021 / 22 was Sochi from Russia).
The third qualifying round maintains the champion and non-champion sections, with 10 teams in the first and 52 in the second. Next comes the play-off round, where the five teams still in contention on the Champions Road face five eliminated teams from the Champions section of the Europa League qualifiers. The winners of these matches advance to the group stage.
In the non-champions section, clubs from the top five European leagues take part in the play-off round, including Tottenham and Roma in 2021/22. They are joined by the 26 non-champion third qualifying round winners, as well as three eliminated teams from the non-champion section of the Europa League qualifiers. Seventeen matches are played, with the winners advancing to the group stage.
The group stage therefore includes 17 teams from the non-champion qualifying path, five teams from the Champions qualifying path and 10 teams that lost in the Europa League play-offs.
Why did UEFA create the Europa Conference League?
There are two main reasons why UEFA created the Europa Conference League. The first is that it helps lighten the Europa League, which from 2021/22 will feature 32 teams in the group stage instead of 48. There is now a clear symmetry between the three European tournaments, each of which has a 32- group stage by team from this campaign.
The main reason, however, was to give clubs from smaller or weaker European nations the chance to participate in continental competition. At least 34 of UEFA’s 55 member associations are guaranteed a place in the group stage of the Europa Conference League. So while Tottenham and Roma will be making headlines in this season’s edition, the tournament was actually staged with Kairat from Kazakhstan and Lincoln Red Imps from Gibraltar in mind.
How does the Europa League Conference work?
The 32 teams will be divided into eight groups of four. Each team will face the others in its group at home and away, and the team that finishes first will advance to the round of 16. The team which finished second in each group will advance to the Group Stage of the Europa League. The winners of these ties will advance to the round of 16.
The format is now simple: round-trip matches in the round of 16, quarterfinals and semi-finals, followed by a final on neutral ground.
What happens if you win the Europa Conference League?
The winners of the Europa Conference League will automatically qualify for the Europa League group stage of the following season, unless they qualify for the Champions League by other means. The winning club will also receive a trophy, a set of medals and 5 million euros ($ 5.9 million) in cash prizes.
How can I watch the Europa League Conference on TV?
