Bala Town (Wales) 1 Sligo Rovers 2

(Mendès 6)(Keena 29, Mata 49)

Sligo Rovers came from behind against Welsh opponents Bala Town to put themselves in charge of their Europa Conference League first round qualifier at Oswestry.

In front of a large crowd of traveling fans, Aidan Keena and Max Mata scored in each half as the Bit O’ Red survived the concession of an early goal – and late sending off – to claim the advantage before the return match. at the Showgrounds next Thursday.

John Russell’s side suffered a nervous start against the part-time Welsh and were down by six minutes.

New Zealand international Nando Pijnaker would later receive a red card, and he was also surprised for the first goal, as he failed to cope with a raid from Bala, and Lassana Mendes finished confidently for the home team.

But the visitors settled into the game after that, and Mata saw a header return from the post.

The equalizer came on the half-hour mark as Keena controlled an overhead ball and brilliantly struck the keeper from inside the box for his 12th goal of the season.

Mata took what turned out to be the winner after a brilliant start to the second half from Bit O’ Red. His initial effort was deflected for a corner, but he was perfectly placed to finish on the resulting set-piece, after Bala failed to clear.

Pijnaker was shown red for a last-man challenge after being taken into possession in the 79th minute, but the opposing team hung on to claim the win.
