UEFA to decide Europa Conference League result against Rennes after the match is canceled

Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa Conference League group match against Rennes will not be played after it was canceled this week due to COVID-19 infections at the Premier League club, the European football governing body said on Saturday. .

UEFA said they had tried to find a viable solution to reschedule Thursday’s game in London and ensure the group stage could be completed.

“Unfortunately, despite all efforts, a solution which could work for both clubs could not be found,” said UEFA. “As a result, the match can no longer be played and the case will therefore be referred to the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body for a decision to be taken in accordance with Annex J of the regulations of the competition. “

UEFA regulations state that Rennes will probably win a 3-0 victory, adding: “If it is not possible to reschedule the match within the final deadline set in Annex J.4.1, the club which cannot play the match will be held responsible of the match will not take place and the match will be declared by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body as withdrawn by the club, which will be considered as having lost it 3 to 0. In addition , the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body may take further disciplinary action if the circumstances justify it.

On the eve of the meeting, Spurs said they were called off after manager Antonio Conte confirmed 13 positive cases at the club, eight involving players and the rest among staff.

Rennes went on to criticize the move, saying it was taken unilaterally by Tottenham and they reserved the right to appeal to UEFA.

Spurs vied with Vitesse Arnhem to finish second in Group G and secure a berth in a knockout round heading into the round of 16. Rennes reached the knockout stage as the winner of Group G with 11 points after five matches.

A statement from Vitesse read: “We are in contact with UEFA, but we are“ in the waiting room. ”It may take a few days before the disciplinary body makes a decision. Chances are good that on Monday in the draw for the next round, two clubs (‘Vitesse / Tottenham’) will participate in the draw as one. “

Tottenham’s Premier League match at Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday was also postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
